Day 29 Video Devotion

A Life of Separation

MOSES

It was by faith that Moses, when he grew up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter. He chose to share the oppression of God's people instead of enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin. Hebrews 11:24-25 (NLT)

As a man stands at the altar, his friends, family, and God listen as the preacher reads a series of questions. "Will you have this woman to be your wife; to live together in the covenant of marriage? Will you love her, comfort her, honor and keep her, in sickness and in health; and... forsaking all others, be faithful to her as long as you both shall live?"

That final portion of the "question of intent" means that the groom promises to leave his single life, in which he had the freedom to spend his time as and with whom he wanted. It means he has separated himself from his old life and joined himself to his bride for life.

The writer of Hebrews tells us that Moses made a choice very much like that. He left his life of case under Pharaoh and identified himself with the suffering of his own people, the Hebrews.

Moses was born to a poor Hebrew mother, but he was raised in a world of privilege. Still, he chose to separate himself from the systems, beliefs, and practices of the world he knew best and cling to those of his people and his God. Moses disowned himself as an adopted member of Pharaoh's family and reclaimed his inheritance as a flesh-and-blood descendant of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

When Moses made that choice, he began a journey that would make him one of the great heroes of the faith. He is an excellent example of what it means to separate oneself for God's use.

When you identify yourself with Jesus Christ, you leave behind your old ways of thinking and join yourself to the ways and thoughts of God. Such radical separation puts you squarely in the middle of God's will. It also positions you to receive his unlimited blessings.
