An Unrepentant Heart

 

Saul

 

Saul was afraid of him and jealous because the Lord had left him and was now with David. (1 Samuel 18:12, TLB)

 

The life of Saul is a sad illustration of the consequences of sin and an unwillingness to turn to God for help. When we first meet Saul, he is a young, handsome, physically impressive man. He initially enjoys the filling of the Holy Spirit and seems to have a bright future as king.

 

But then he begins making selfish decisions. He inappropriately offers a sacrifice. He makes a rash vow that almost causes him to murder his son Jonathan. He keeps forbidden plunder from the defeat of Amalek. He is filled with jealousy and fear at the success and popularity of David. Paranoid, Saul orders the murder of eighty-five priests whom he suspects are loyal to David. His last spiritual consultation is with a medium. In the end, Saul commits suicide. Not a very impressive resume, is it?

 

Someone has said that every life is worth examining, even the bad ones, for at least they serve as examples of how not to live.

Certainly that is the case with Saul. He expressed regret and sorrow for his deeds, but he never really repented of his sin. He allowed himself to be overcome by sinful attitudes that drove him away from God, to the very brink of insanity, and finally over the edge.

 

Don't let sin get a foothold in your life! If you are constantly angry, jealous, or fearful, talk to a mature Christian leader. Get help before you drift into real danger.

 

The path to ruin often begins with unconfessed sin.
